[RWP] Another Controller for Automation slashcrazy Tweaking

I didn't find the wiki on configuring a USB generic gamePad yet, but
seem to have it recognized by Reaper, but haven't heard it change a
sound yet.
Add JoyStick is the tab just above; not below; the line where you enable
midi keyboards.
First I plugged the gamePad into a U?SB port, outside of Reaper, so
Windows could see its internal driver, which it did instantly.
Then I opened Reaper x64 version 4.4402, pressed ctrl+p to go to
preferences/midi devices.
I tab down once to Add Joystick
In NVDA it doesn't recognize enter, so I route focus to the numPad and
hit NVDA key+enter at the bottom of the numpad; and the dialog opens.
First it says that it doesn't recognize the joystick; then I press some
arrow, I think the right arrow; and it recognizes the gamePad; and
describes it as generic, with a very long device number.
I tab down and there's already a checkmark on virtual keyboard midi; and
I place a checkmark with the spacebar on use as controller.
I then have no other selection other than close, which takes me back to
track view.
I wasn't satisfied that the enabling would stick after I exited Reaper,
so I went back to preferences and did the apply and OK thing.
Then I brought up a song with insert media; set repeats on with ctrl+R,
hoping to hear volume change when I set the left joystick as a midi
control for volume.
I hit F4 to open the actions list.
I typed volume into the edit search box at the top of the actions dialog
and hit enter.
I tabbed down to list and there is everything with volume in its name.
I selected Link Track Volume/Pan to Midi Volume/Pan on All Channels,
number 19 on that list.
I pressed add to add the joystick as a control, and when it asks me to
enter the shortcut button or midi controller movement; I wiggle the left
joystick; and it says Midi CC 34 unselected; I arrow down and it says
Midi CC 34 selected; so I tab to close; which should lock in that
assignment.
When I reopen the actions list with F4; search for volume again; select
that particular action in the list; there is CC 34 ahead of its name as
the shortcut.
Yea, the gamePad's joystick is recognized as a control surface!
But, can't hear any volume change in the music track when it's playing
as I wiggle the joystick.
Same for automating writing volume for that track.
I think it's my ignorance of what either CC 34 does, or what the action
Link Track Volume/Pan to Midi Volume/Pan for All Channels is meant to do.
I believe now that all I needed to do to link Track Volume/Pan to Midi
Volume/Pan on All Channels was a button to toggle it on, not a midi CC,
so I may be linking it; but that's not sending a midi message to change
volume/pan.
I'll try another action, like Nudge Volume Up; and just assign a gamePad
button to it; since I have the gamePad also assigned as virtual keyboard
midi.
If I hear the track's volume raising when I press the gamePad button
I'll have success I can hear; but I really want to hear the joystick act
as a midi fader.
I just need to think which action to use.
At least I know the gamePad is recognized; and reaper is seeing it send
a CC message from the joystick.
back to joyous experimentation with my spacey new $9 control surface.
