Did you press shift plus A on the track you wanted to edit? By default, 
reaper will split items on all tracks unless you press Shift Plus A to 
tell it to perform an action only to the track the cursor is on.

I'm the new guy here, so beyond that, I can't help further as I am 
learning myself. But I did just learn that tidbit of info, so thought 
I'd pass it along.
