Good speech, Steve! Right on the money.
Somebody on here once commented that he did not want to pay for his
blindness. Who then, I asked. who should pay. Why should anybody else
pay. It's not their problem. The fact is that making stuff accessible
takes one heck of a lot of work, as Steve can certainly attest. So can I,
and several others who have burned the midnight oil, and busted their ass to
make something accessible for others.
I don't like paying. I hate having to pay 6 grand for a braille display,
when the sightie down the street gets his large video monitor for pennies on
the dollar, and finds it infinitely more gratifying. How is that fare?
Simple. It ain't.
But, when I think of the increased productivity, and the living 6 grand has
allowed me to make, I figure I made money in the end.
There is no fareness in life. None at all. Stuff just is what it is. And,
everybody has to pay, based on who, and what, they are. Don't think of it
as unfair, dont' think of it as cost. Think of it as an investment. make
the investment. If you can't create your own access solutions, be willing
to provide something of value to somebody who can. Consider that your
investment.
And then, put your heart and soul into making it pay off. And never never
compare your bottom line to that of the next guy. Stay focused on your own
ascent, don't seek fareness, it will just make you bitter, because there is
no such thing.
And be willing to bend over backward to compensate for your own limitations.
You'll do better than you thought you could. And, you'll be happier about
it.
