[RWP] side chaining a bass note to a kick drum?

Assuming you've got a nice tight groove and a decent kick sound
happening, I'd say that 90% of the time you're going to want to send
the kick to the sidechain input of your bass track, so your bass will
duck out slightly to make space each time a kick lands. As far as
numbers of specific frequencies go or perhaps numbers of thresholds
and ratios would be more relevant here, it's impossible to say without
hearing what you're working on. Even then, this is the art of it man,
the bit where you'll have to do some discovery to find out what floats
your boat and sounds like what's in your head. If you're stuck, flick
through presets, find something close to what you're shooting for,
then use the Shift+P dialog, tinker with numbers and keep doing it
until you bring it home. Make sure you pay attention to what the
numbers were set to each time you use a preset, and with a bit of
conscious effort you'll develop a feel for how each plugin responds.
It's not as instantly intuitive as being able to see gain reduction on
a meter, but you'll end up with a better working knowledge of
compression or whatever style of plug you take this approach with than
the guy who relies on his meters the whole time.

Good luck
