Oh, another thing I forgot to add is that you can, of course, send 
anything to mod and carrier. If, for example, you don't have two live 
audio sources, you could set up a softsynth with a sawtooth wave form 
and use that for the carrier instead of an audio input from an 
interface. This vocoder doesn't have any kind of synth engine in it, as 
some do (Vokko from Klanglabs comes to mind,) so you really do need to 
drive it with two audio sources.
