This probably wasn't what you were looking for but you know how we decided automation was flaky and most folks were doing volume automation via items splitting and such?
Why not just set volumes down all the way in your split items?
for parts you want to mute.
Not elegant, but it'll work.
Automation in reaper right now is something that'll drive a blind fellow to substance abuse 'grin'.

Subject: [RWP] automating mutes and solos in Reaper 3.x
Hello:
I'm trying to figure out how to automate mutes and solos in a project
with Reaper v3.78. This doesn't happen by default with the actions that
are mapped to f5/f6, or even with my control surface (Korg Nanokontrol
in Mackie control universal mode) and it's mute/solo buttons. Is there
another action that works? I can automate other things, like master
volume, playrate change, track volume and pan, as well as effect
parameters, but so far, I've come up empty on doing the obvious and
successfully automating track mutes and solos.
