Colin,
I don't know oft he Behringer, but their products are a little confusing by
much owners. They are cried out as cheap ones with worse quality. I can't
confirm because I have no Behringer product, but I was read about many
things regarding mixers and there are some no-name products which seems to
be better and which I was purchasing.
According to Olympus, we have in Germany a shop www.audiotranskription.de
which are testing several field recorders in professional way and compare it
in many different setups. So they make recordings with all available
products and put them to comparison on their web site. I don't know if they
write the tests also in English. Our business works with them together and
so I got the chance to get in touch with several products. As I was gone
there to purchase a Zoom H4n, I went away with an Olympus LS-11 in my bag.
Not only the better chassis which feels more professional, also the in my
opinion better sound quality was a case to chose it. It is right, that the
panorama effects is not as great as with the Zoom, but the depth and
detailness is greater. On LS-10, which was the prior model, they had
problems regarding capturing low frequency, which was better in LS-11. The
LS-5 is the same with less accessories and less memory. The LS-11 comes with
a IR remote which can be used optionally, with wind cuts which are not as
good as the separate wind shield.
The LS-100 is a very great step forward. The internal layout features two
separate boards, one for the digital, one for the analogue technology. So
the critics on LS-5 and LS-11 was a noisy sound if the microphone was set to
high level, this was fully reduced in LS-100. A second problem on LS-5 and
LS-11 and prior models is the speak-over between the capsules. Because they
have a ball characteristics and not half balls, they will speak over and
that's why the stereo effect is reduces. Olympus took care of this so the
optional WS-5 wind shield has a soft bumper between them and this corrects
this problem in a good way. On LS-100 they put a piece of metal between
them, so the speak-over effect was reduced in a very god way.
Because of many setups, please think about that we all uses two ears. So
like people hearing something, it is high effecting where the recorder is
placed in, as well as the hight, as well as the positioning of the target.
Chors and others who take much places, or in an opera the orchestral area,
this is a very great area where any recorder might have differences. So
that's why professionals uses several and more mics which are placed in the
room and near instruments.
Also remember that the Olympus ones are the only devices (except LS-5,
LS-10, LS-11) which gies speech feedback and can nearly controlled without
any manual. So I am also amazed of my LS-100 since I was bought one of the
first available devices. And it was better since the last two firmware
updates.

the zoom, for me, is hands down the best live stereo recorder out there.
If you want something to record live music from coffee shop level up to and
including arena or stadium conserts, the zoom handles it all very well.
The down side is that unless you are in a good sweet spot in the stereo
field, the recording will sound off kilter. I've got some excellent
recordings from pubs and such, but some of them were taken with the recorder
on a table or bar off center from the front house cabs. This is not such a
big deal if you can close enough to the band to get the stage mix...the
onboard mikes on the zoom gear are wonderful in many ways, but their stereo
imaging is so wide that sometimes it's hard to get a good solid enjoyable
recording when you have such a severe stereo field.
Not sure about the olympus stuff, but I've heard recordings from those and
they are very good as well, though lacking some of the character and
posative coloration found on the zoom products.
Has anyone tried some of the cheaper condenser mikes such as the behringer
C4 set using either a laptop or one of the hand held recorders at a live
show?
The c4's go for about 75 bucks brand new and I think they actually sound
quite good from what I've heard.

I'm not really trying to go totally professional, although I don't want to
sound like I am recording from the bottom of the can either.
I've heard recordings from Olympus as well as zoom products, and I kind of
like both. I'm going to have to maybe get my hands on either the LS 100, or
