I don't like the adat interface, because you loose channels when you go higher sampling rates.

What's the point if you don't have firewire inputs or out-puts, 
then you'd have to use it as a fold back device and still have to get another interface with enough inputs.

  I'd recommend the Allen & Heath over the Mackie 1640i providing your
  budget will allow. 18 in/18out  analog plus another 8 in/out over
  ADAT. Some controller surface functionality and midi out  (only, no
  in) over FW or regular 5 pin midi. Plus the A&H mic pres and
  converters can hang with Apogee and UA.
