Hi Jim and all,
Here's how I use shift+A key combination: it is useful when you have 
multiple tracks and you want to split an item only on one or certain 
tracks, in fact the action is called select item under edit cursor on 
selected tracks. So, let's say we have a 3 tracks project but wont to 
split only the first track? I select the first track with up/down arrow 
and then I do shift+A so that when I do The S key it splits the item 
only on that particular track, otherwise The S key would create an item 
in every track.
