[RWP] OT: Midi channel assignment

Hello all!

I am a little bit confused. And this matters both Reaper and Sonar.

My understanding was from my beginning of making music, that I have to 
assign midi channels to every instrument, hardware and software. So I 
did this! Later I get synths, which do not work, when I assign a midi 
channel to them. So I set up the channels to "none" and it worked! And 
this is my confusion! Why do I needn't to assign channels for software? 
That hardware synths need channels for each instrument is 
understandable.  My thought was, that all synths, that are set up to 
"none" midi channel would create a mess of tones, would play together 
and that stuff! So what do I have to do? Is it better to assign channels 
or not?
