You can read track specific VU meters in real time by pressing j (left
channel) or k (right channel) on a highlighted track, either with a live
input or recorded audio on that track. This is a function of ReaAccess.
Then, there is the peak inspector, which is accessed with alt+shift+P.
Here, you can set the view for last touched track, with or without
master. When the peak inspector is enabled, you can hide that window,
then use alt+shift+f9 through alt+shift+F12 to read the peak of channels
1 through 4, and alt shift f8 to reset peak.
You can also set a threshold in the peak inspector window for alerts.
For example, if you want ReaAccess to yell at you when you hit -0.01DB,
you can. This can get very scary in practice though, because the update
frequency is so fast. If, for example, you have a source with a constant
level that goes above your set threshold and stays there, you'll get a
bunch of rapidly triggered windows default sounds, and ReaAccess
continuously reading DB values at you. Neat that it can do this, and,
since it talks directly to the screen reader, it also works when Reaper
isn't in focus, but I wish it was a bit more granular about it.
