[RWP] introduction and a question?

There's around 1 to 1.5ms latency within the computer itself, from its
processing, unavoidable, but if you get 5ms latency playing a midi
keyboard;it feels instantaneous; close enough to the feeling of playing
presets within a hardware keyboard, so it's not difficult getting notes
right where you intend.
My first Emu PCI card would do 3.6ms in Reaper with 64 sample buffer
setting, and the more complicated PcIE Emu card I have now does 5ms,
plenty good enough.
40 ms latency could disturb guitar players, though many of the early
midi guitars weren't more responsive than that.
Reaper can offset huge latency, so that repeated takes will align, but
try to get a faster sound card; or; you can retrain your brain to ignore
the latency so it doesn't mess up your playing; or monitor your guitar
directly and don't monitor what's coming out of the computer, 40 ms later.
Your brain is not limited like a mere dumb computer, so if the machine
fails you, your thinking processes can change.
I've noticed when playing rhythms into a drum machine that quantizes
live, so notes fall onto the next sixteenth note division, that it's
easy enough to learn to play a few ms ahead of actual time, to give time
for the drum box to align your percussion hits onto the next division.
Drummers are used to pushing the rhythm by playing slightly ahead of
actual time, or is equally at home playing laid back, slightly behind
the beat.
A drummer friend of mine is great at doing that, not only just ahead or
behind the rigid beat, but just the right amount, to cyncopate,
something you can't get from a drum machine, which is too dumb to have
an human feeling for cyncopation.
