[RWP] using reaper as a live setup?

Hi Tristan,
I run Reaper with Window-Eyes 6.1 on XP, and now I'm trying to run it
with NVDA on Win7 64 bits, but program change and pitch bend would be
the same whatever screenreader.

Whether you can select program change from your midi keyboard depends on
which VST is running.
Some VST plugIns, like the Dune demo I use as a test VST, because it's
so standard and dependable, reacts instantly to program changes sent
from every midi keyboard's front panel.
So does Cakewalk's Z3TA.

Others won't react to program change messages, and you need to find
their program Handler dialog, like Cakewalk Rapture and Dimension Pro.
I have learned to play presets in some, like FM8 and Absynth 5, by
discovering where on their interface their program increment and
decrement buttons are; and advancing through programs 1 at a time from
there, not exactly suitable for realtime performance; but it does allow
me to use their wonderful presets

I don't have the chops for performance, I input from a midi keyboard and
assemble music, so work arounds are okay for me.
As for pitch bend, you should be able to change the default setting
that your midi keyboard sends to a VST.
Some VST plugs have their own settings.
I notice that in FM8 and Absynth 5; pitch bend and mod wheel settings
change with each preset patch, some have the pitchbend changing by
semitones, some have it jumping an octave quickly, some even have it
leaping up or down 7 octaves, to produce those dramatic shreiks you hear
in top 40.
It's the same with mod wheel settings, they can be different per preset;
most commonly changing vibrato depth, but some use it to radically open
and close a filter.
.
I don't know what would be a plugin that would suit your musical style
that would always respond to program change messages, would have 16
channels available, and would have the instruments you need.
Dune is extremely dependable, but it's disco or dance oriented,
synthetic, without a very reallistic piano, for instance.
Cakewalk's Rapture and Dimension Pro are full of rich sounds, based on
sound fonts; but their program handler dialog takes a few seconds to
navigate to load new presets.

Everything you ask about is possible in Reaper, but if I was going to
perform somewhere, I'd find a single VST that offered what I needed,
rather than trying to get it from several plugs.
I wish I knew what that all in 1 plugin is, I've been looking for it for
years.
