[RWP] New Problem, was RWP] Inserting Effects with A few less Keystrokes

I think I did the usual configurations required to get any soft synth
going, after inserting it from the Effects routing page instead of track
view, but I'll try again.
Roy, about another little problem, in my first session with Reaper
version 4.21, I suddenly lost all audio, music from the soundcard and
speech from the RealTech chip, and had to shut down the computer.
This is the very first time I ever got an unexplained total lockup from
Reaper.
I had been doing fine with 4.02, and 4.20, so I downloaded 4.22 and read
on www.reaper.fm about some crashes with 4.21.
I installed 4.22 but now I have a peculiar thing I did not have previously.
Now, when I insert a soft synth, before I can hear its output, I have to
press the letter I for the IO routing and assign its audio out to my
soundcard's outputs.
This was not required previously, all VSTI plugs were outputting to the
soundcard's outputs as soon as inserted.
Sonar hasn't changed, a soft synth in it plays right away, as before, so
it's not a change in the sound card, but somewhere in Reaper's settings.
I suppose I can revert to default Reaper factory settings, but I'd
rather learn the cause if I can.
I believe it must be in options/preferences/audio device, and I've
poured over those settings and don't find anything unusual.
It doesn't keep me from recording to need to manually set each synth's
audio output to my soundcard's outputs each time, it's just a step that
wasn't required previously.
I hope it's something obvious and someone will know.
Thanks,
Indigo L
