[RWP] Midi Input

Hi Mr. Snowman:

What I'm about to tell you is basically everything I know about recording midi with Reaper, which isn't much, since I only just got around to trying it for the first time last weekend, having previously only used it for audio for nearly a year.

To record midi, choose a midi input instead of audio input, which is what you get by default. Context key on the track, choose midi input, whatever port/channel configuration you want to use.
Apparently, you can have audio and midi on a single track, though I haven't tried this myself. I just started a project requiring a bunch of stupid samples, and didn't want to load them all into my Yamaha Motif XS, so I used many copies of Reaper's horribly basic, but really cool if it grew up a little bit, sample playback plugin. Each track was set to a midi input, and had a copy of this plugin as an effect. It worked, but I know there have to be more efficient ways to do this.

Now, I will add a question of my own. How are you supposed to quantize midi without doing it at record time? Selecting an item, and using the quantize items to grid action doesn't  seem to do anything useful, however, it works if quantizing the recording in real time, which isn't necessarily desirable, though a nice feature to have, and one I use regularly when recording loop-based sequence chains on my Motif.
