[RWP] Midi Input

Guys, I apologize in advance for asking this basic question again.. The
problem is that my day job has me 150 percent loaded. I get about 30
seconds a month to play with reaper. By the time my next 30 seconds comes
up, I have forgotten most of what I learned last time.
I want to create a midi track.
Create new track with control+t.
Select the new track, and tab through the options.
Midi output is set to my midi interface, which is enabled and works with
ReaSynth.
Tabbing across, record mode is set to Midi Replace.
Now the name of the track is my midi interface.
Arming the track shows that it is still an audio track. Audio feeds
through, but not midi.
How the hell do you make it a midi track?
Oddly enough, when I insert reaSynth on a track, my keyboard plays that
synth. And, if I tab in to the track options, and choose my midi hardware
as the midi output, I can play ReaSynth and my external module at the same
time.
I just can't convince reaper that my virgin track is really a midi track,
and not an audio track.
Help, before I beat reaper senseless. <grin>
