[RWP] Cannot delete a selection

Hi all,

Does anyone have any advice on what I am doing wrong? I am trying to 
delet a section of audio.
1. I find the start point where I want to begin the delete. I press 
control plus shift plus left bracket to mark the start point.
2. I next play the file and press control plus space to pause the file 
where I want to set the end point for the deletion. I press control plus 
shift plus right bracket to mark the end of the selection
3. I then press the delete key, but I get a message stating "Error 
doalog, no time selection.

Does anyone have any idea on what I am doing wrong?

The next thing I tried to do was to find the start point and press the 
letter S, then find the end point and again press the letter s. However 
when using control plus shift left or write arrow, I am not able to 
select a single split, two of them are selected. How can I just select 
one of these split points.

Also is there a way in Reaper or Reaaccess to both speak the selection, 
or to just play what is selected?
