[RWP] high qualty instrments with reaper

there's something in Reaper called "ReaControlMidi" which I'm now investigating deeply.
you can also select patches either via the plug-in's interface , or via .fxb/fxp files which are the standard vst format for storing banks/patches.

  Am I correct in thinking that you can use a VST instrument on say a Midi track when you wish to change the instrument sound?  Say from a grand piano sound to a distorted electric guitar sound?
  The vertual VST instruments always come up as FX for me and I haven't yet noticed them altering anything with Midi files.
  Perhaps they only work with audio files?
  I'm pretty new at all this kind of stuff at the moment.
