[RWP] high qualty instrments with reaper

while we are on the topic of VST instruments.
Am I correct in thinking that you can use a VST instrument on say a Midi track when you wish to change the instrument sound?  Say from a grand piano sound to a distorted electric guitar sound?
The vertual VST instruments always come up as FX for me and I haven't yet noticed them altering anything with Midi files.
Perhaps they only work with audio files?
I'm pretty new at all this kind of stuff at the moment.
