[RWP] Automating vst plugins without using a control surface. Can anyone help?.

I want to automate a vst plugin by just using the pC keyboard, and not my control surface. do I need to use the same procedure as when using the learn menu, Or is there a another way to arm the envelope for a specific parameter of a plugin?
