[RWP] Reaper on a mac

The Mac version is about as accessible to VoiceOver as the Windows one is to most Windows screen readers without ReaAccess. Menus and dialogs read okay, but the main window doesn't at all.

The Mac version supports the same plug in architecture as the Windows version, so there could be a ReaAccess version for the Mac. Programs can speak through the VoiceOver voice, similarly to what is possible on Windows with the screen reader direct access that is available there.

I doubt that many changes would be required to recompile ReaAccess for the Mac. It is technically possible. I hope that it does happen.

Too bad ReaAccess isn't open source, or I would have already tried. If you all need some technical pointers/help with getting started on a Mac port, let me know.

Come to think of it, why isn't ReaAccess open source? It is a free program, after all. As far as I know, they aren't planning on charging for it, so where is the harm in disclosing the source?

Hahaha. I just checked the ReaAccess.com site, just to be sure that they don't, in fact, distribute source, and it is terrible. Someone has put up forums, after all. Just like I cautioned, they're already a mess, full of hundreds of spam ads for car insurance. I'm telling you ReaAccess guys, just setup a hosted blog. If funds are a problem, just use wordpress.com. You can pay like $10 a year to make their ads disappear from your site. Even if you don't, though, they aren't annoying visually, and are located on the page in a place that won't annoy screen reader users.

I have my own domain (BryanSmart.com), complete with web hosting, Exchange server for e-mail, FTP server, etc. Even still, I use WordPress for my main site. I work on lots of little projects, and would rather give my time to those projects instead of the web site maintenance. If you go to www.bryansmart.com or bryansmart.com with a browser, you're redirected to blog.bryansmart.com, which, itself, is a DNS alias to bryansmart.wordpress.com. WordPress lets you mask your site so that it can show up as if it were directly inside your own domain. I don't care about that for vanity purposes, but it helps keep links organized, since I use my own web server, not WordPress, for storing large files. Anyway, it is set and forget. When I have a new release of a project, or some other update, I just put a link on one of the WordPress pages, and maybe make an announcement post in the right category. That's it. I'm in and out in maybe 5 minutes. They even have an iPhone app, so that you can add content to the site, including pics and video from the iPhone, moderate comments, etc.

Have a look at my site. Once configured for appearance by someone with a good eye to design, you don't need to think much about formatting or layout again, just add content. My site works great with a screen rederreader, is very simple/to the point, well organized, and, most importantly, requires no technical maintenance.

Wishing you all the best!

Bryan

Subject: [RWP] Reaper on a mac

Hi all,
Just curious: is there anyone who tried Reaper on a mac using OS10.6? How does it work with Voice over,? Are there any plans for a Mac version of Reaaccess?
Rene
