[RWP] midi controller

Jim, are you running ReaAccess, or tackling Reaper barefoot?
With ReaAccess running, arrowing to a track focuses or selects it.
At the tab key will be the various options for that track.
I don't remember all the options, but of course like in other daws,
generally, I want that track unmuted, with its channel set to all
channels or 1 to 16, its input and output set from and to my midi
interface, and monitor set to normal, and record armed.

I have never used the path you found to pass through to module, so don't
know what that does.
In Reaper's routing dialog you can easily assign sends and receives for
any synth track to any other track, like the track you want to record on.
For instance, arrow to your synthesizer's track, hit the letter I to
open the routing dialog, tab down until you find assign send, thenarrow
down until you find the track you want to record on .
Push the escape key and you have completed assignment of a send from
your synthesizer's track to the record track, so your synthesizer's
output will go there, and that track will record the midi your synth
outputs.
To send the midi from your record track to the synth track, arrow to
your record track, hit I to open the routing dialog, tab down to assign
send, arrow down to the synth's track, push escape and you have assigned
the midi on your record track to play your synthesizer.
The ReaAccess routing dialog opened with the letter I is your friend.
All the tabs are so well named and intuitive it's easy to assign sends
and receives from any track to any track, or to an external hardware
device, like a synth module.
I was so simple minded I thought I needed to assign both sends and
receives, each pointing back to the other track, but I now find I don't
need both, Reaper takes care of the other one.
For instance, I'm currently experimenting with Roger Linn's AdrenaLinn
Sync 2, which is a soft version of his wonderful guitar pedal.
I bring a VSTI synth into Reaper, then bring in the Adrenalinn plug,
which is a VST effect.
I find a single track for each.
I arrow to the synth track, hit I for routing dialog, assign a send to
the AdrenaLinn plug, and escape.
When I arrow to the AdrenaLinn track and look in the routing dialog,
Reaper has already assigned a send back to the synthesizer track.
By the way, I love AdrenaLinn Sync 2, which is very useable out of the
box, only a little spotting needed, and wonderful, only $99!
As for Reaper, It's all much simpler than it looks, and only complex as
required.
If those track options at the tab key are set up right, hit the letter R
and recording will begin.
Hit the spacebar to stop recording, hit W to rewind to beginning of
track, hit spacebar again to play, and you'll hear what you just recorded.
