you almost have to make 3 items, material pre-edit, the material which 
should die, and the stuff post edit.
go to the beginning of the item marked for death, and set a mark there.
Then press delete on the item.
Navigate to the material post-edit, and select all items forward.
Cut to clipboard, go to the marer you set, then paste.
This allows you to cut material out of a track leaving everything else in 
place.
