[RWP] Editing revisited

Hi chaps,

Desperately trying to get a project ready for tomorrow, and either
I've been working too long today to think logically or I'm losing my
memory.

So... editing... specifically editing the time line of one track and
it only taking affect on that one track... for the life of me I can't
figure out where I'm going wrong with the below workflow:

I select the track I want to edit with up and down arrows
Next, I make the time selection using Alt+Shift+[ and Alt+Shift+]
I select the item which this time selection is relevant too using
Ctrl+Shift+left as it's the first item on the track
But here's the clincher, when I hit delete now, Reaper deletes the
entire item rather than this small section of it which the time
selection should be specifying.
If I tinker with the order of the workflow and select the item first,
then make my time selection, I just get told "can't delete".

Any pointers will be hugely appreciated, got a hard night's reaping ahead.
