select the audio with alt shift [, to mark the beginning, and alt shift ] to mark the end.
Press shift S to split that selection in to an item, and then numpad 4 and 6 to move it left and right, respectively.
A good way to listen to your selection is to have it looped. To do this, select your audio, and press control+r to activet repeat mode. press left arrow to move the play cursor in to the selection so that when play is pressed, your selection loops.
To get more presice with the material selected, use control+, and control+. to move the start point left or right, and add alt to that to adjust the end point.

Unfortunately I still can't quite get my head around how you achieve certain actions in reaper, so if anyone can answer some very basic questions for me I will be very grateful and thanks in advance for your help.
1 How do you select a portion of audio material on a given track and then nudge it to the left or right?
2 How can you listen to the audio you have selected in order to hear what you have done?
I really need to have the ability to deal with audio as one can in Sonar and sound forge.
