Hi David,
First you need to enable the midi device to which your Yamaha keyboard
is connected. Press ctrl+p (preferences) and go to the "midi devices
tab" There you'll find a list with all the available midi-in ports and
a list with all the available midi-out ports together with some other
options.
Select the midi device to which your keyboard is connected and when it
says "disabled" rightclick on it and select enable. The midi inputs also
have the option to be used with a midicontroller. You can select enable
and control at the same time, or just one of them.
After setting all this, you have to adjust the midi in and out port for
the track you wish to record. You can find this option by navigating
through the objects with your tab key.
You can also use your Yamaha keyboard the same way you would use a
vst-plugin by using the Reainsert plugin. This one can be found among
the Cockos plugins which come with Reaper. But this could be a step
ahead of what you're up to at the moment, as you're just using Reaper
for the first time.
I would like to recommend the "up and running" user guide to every new
user. It's a very well written manual which can be downloaded from the
Reaper website.
Hope this helps,
Rene
