Yes, you're right. There is a checkbox for that in Reaper.
Most of the time, I use a second monitor mix, when I'm recording  a 
singer, I'm working with very often. Or sometimes when I'm recording my 
own vocals, because I can easily make a second mix, without affecting my 
main mix.
There is a little bit of latency when I'm recording and tracking in 
Reaper this way, but it's not more then just a really subtle "Chorus" . 
Most singers, me as well, just use one side of their headphones when 
singing, so it's abolutely not a big issue.
