Please examine a few items of Options menue.
Record mode - normal is to be checked;
Ripple editing - is to be turned off.
Another thing which could be helpful at these first steps: Please look at the time wher you are before and after recording. You can use Ctrl + J for this.
Do you hear your first track while are recording the second one?
