[RWP] newbe with reaper, really stuck

Hi,
I've just downloaded Reaper and have ReaAccess working. I have never used a program like this, but I know this is the program I am looking for.
But I am having a myriad of problems.
 first, no mattter how I set my sound settings, I hear no sound when I play a file. I tried Direct sound, I don't have any working asio, and I tried direct wav or whatever it's called, and wdm said that there was an error so I couldn't use that. Nothing works. I tried starting a new project, inserting an audio file, then going to the action menu and pressing the play option (space doesn't always work), absolutely nothing.
Now I'm trying to record a track, I press control t to make a new track, give it a name, turn on the arm recording option, then press control r. Jaws says canceled and then then the setting I last adjusted is turned back to where it was before. So if I arm the track, and press control r, it turns it off.
Then, after we fix that issue, if I wanted to put effects on the track, for example the reapitch or the reaverb or whatever, how would I do that? The documentation, at least what I could find, wasn't very specific on that.
I probably should've looked around before I dove into this, but what I did find wasn't helping much. I thought that other peaperless reaperians might be able to fill the gaps *smile*.Any help, even a website somewhere that helps with getting started with rea-access, is appreciated as I am truly stuck.
