O jees,
In my pragmatic, old fashioned opinion, 192KHz sampling rate is absolutely
obscene. Totally unnecessary, and will possibly cause performance problems
when you stack up lots of tracks, especially if you apply effects, unless
you've got some pretty high performance equipment.
But, to a point, what higher sampling rates get you is not wider usable
frequency response. They do that, but 44.1 is already as wide as most
humans can hear, supporting a 22khz upper frequency limit. Instead, what
you get is less distortion at higher frequencies, less so-called aliasing
when two higher frequency tones interact. For example, if you combine two
tones, say 16khz and 17khz, like might be part of a symbol hit, the two
tones will combine to form a difference frequency when combined in a
nonlinear fashion. The nonlinearity comes from the fact that a 44khz
sampling rate, sampling a 22khz tone, no matter how high the bit depth,
doesn't give you a sign wave. It gives you one low pulse, followed by a
high pulse, more like a square wave.
So, due to that nonlinearity, with 44khz sampling, those two tones will
combine to produce a phantom 1khz intermodulation tone. With the higher
sampling rates, those tones are combined in a more linear fashion, which
means the 1khz intermodulation is less. Higher bit depth also helps
somewhat with that particular problem, but not in a frequency dependent
way. It reduces distortion across the total spectrum. Still, 16bit
samples are good to one part in 65535, which is still pretty darned good.
But, mostly , it makes for a nicer, and lower noise floor.
But, all that is mostly theoretical. I suspect that most people, in a
carefully controlled, double blind test, could not tell you the difference
even between 44 and 96khz, running with normal, typical program content.
Perhaps they could with properly chosen test tones. But, who the heck
grooves on test tones. Oh, Patrick, I forgot. <grin>
