[RWP] Recommendations on a USB sound device with asio?

How many simultaneous tracks do you want to record? Do you need multiple
inputs and outputs? Do you need midi ports, optical or sp/dif I/O? What
about microphone preamps?

If you just want a good, solid 2x2 USB interface, take a look at the
Emu 0404.

You probably can't get cleaner than that in a USB interface. Unlike most
USB interfaces, this one is a true USB 2.0 chip, so you'll get better
asio performance than most USB devices offer, which are really just
USB1.1, making them 2.0 compattible.

Or, you could try the Lexicon Alpha or M-Audio Fasttrack, which are both
cheaper, though I'm pretty sure the Emu has better converters in it, and
better performance overall.

If you need more I/O options, M-Audio has FastTrack Pro's going up to 8x8.
At that point, I'd be looking at firewire interfaces though, maybe
Focusrite or PreSonus units.

Also, your Yamaha Motif XS8, assuming you still have it, has m-lan
built-in, which functions as a firewire sound interface with the proper
drivers and software installed. The advantage to this is you also get an
optional control surface, if you want to map things from your keyboard,
such as knobs and sliders to control tracks and effect parameters, and
the keyboard's transport controls to operate the DAW. Admittedly, this
m-lan integration was designed by Yamaha specifically to be used with
Cubase, but the basics can work with just about anything with any kind
of control surface support with enough time and effort.
