If you're trying to use the DECtalk-USB that you mentioned, it may not 
be well supported. Emacspeak has two speech servers: one for DECtalk 
Express, and the other for software DECtalk. You could try the DECtalk 
Express version with the USB.

However, there may be incompatibilities between the DECtalk Express 
command set and the DECtalk-USB. Unfortunately, I don't know. I don't 
have a DECtalk-USB.

I borrowed a USB to serial adapter from a colleague at one point and 
attempted to connect the DECtalk Express to a laptop with it. As far as 
I can remember, Linux didn't properly handle the serial to USB adapter. 
I can't remember exactly what went wrong. I haven't yet returned the 
adapter to its owner, so I could try it again, I suppose.
