[DECtalk] something i heard

Hi,

I've gotten DT 4.4 to work on Windows 7. Basically it just needs to be
run in compatibility mode for Win 98. Just go to properties for the
speak.exe program and go to compatibility and tick 'run this program
in compatibility mode for:' and then choose Windows 98. Worked for me.
I don't know why the file association isn't working with DT 4.4 but it
could be a number of things.

As for why we would want/need a SAPI version of DECTalk from Enable?
There's a version of SAPI DT floating around on the list that sounds
like 4.6.4 or something, and it is certainly welcomed among the DT
users, but it has a bit of a lag and isn't classic DECTalk (e.g., 4.3
or 4.2cd, not 4.6x as they don't sound like classic DECTAlk such as
found in the DT Express etc). Basically, we want an old version of
DECTalk in a SAPI package that is responsive. That would be a dream
come true for most of us, and probably bring back some memories of
using DECTalk classic back in the days of the Express and PCI.
Basically, it would be honoring Dennis Klatt's work and giving the
DECTalk users of the world reason for celebration.

A possible issue I see looming in the future though is, how to get
this vintage dated DECTalk version running on the latest systems, let
alone get the code itself? Fonix hasn't really been any help, and
they'll do anything for a buck, and it's not fair to Enable to throw
money in a hole, so to speak. This would have to be carefully planned.
Another thing, if this old version of DECTalk were to become a
SAPI/new Speak Window, the testers of the software should be given
respect this time around. If something's wrong, let's not smother it
this time.

Finally, I hope something happens with this, but finding this other
SAPI version of DT was pretty cool. It'll certainly work for the time
being.
