[DECtalk] Any news?

Hi,
Okay, I assume the situation is this. Back when Digital wrote the Speak
window, if they truly put it in the public domain, that means they gave up
all copyright to the product. But, and this is a very important but! I'd be
willing to bet that what is in the public domain is *just* the Speak window,
and *not!* the DECtalk speech synthesis software and data Speak uses. Here's
why. Putting the Speak window in the public domain, or even keeping the
copyright on it and releasing it under a "Anyone can do anything they want"
license would be a reasonable thing to do. For one thing, Speak probably
served not only as a demo to try to get people to buy DECtalk products, but
also if the source was distributed, it would serve as an example of how to
interface with the DECtalk libraries you just bought. On the other hand,
releasing DECtalk itself into the public domain would be a stupid thing to
do from a business perspective. If you release DECtalk as PD, anyone can
give it away freely and even modify it, which is *not* what you want to be
going on if you want to make money off it. So while people may have had the
Speak source code, I'd be willing to bet dollars to donuts that source
distribution did *not* include the source code for DECtalk.
