[DECtalk] dectalk express, software volume control?

Right, well that's boring, because I've noticed that Jaws isn't quite as
loud as the DecTalk power-on message, and there seems to be nothing that
can be done about it. I'm guessing they cut the volume back by a couple
of DB so as not to run the amp at max all the time or something?

I have an acute hearing loss, so I'm running my DecTalk express with a
set of external amplified speakers, and I'm thinking of replacing the
internal speaker because it's so tiny and blah, and there's enough room
in the case to put something bigger in it.

I remember using a DecTalk express in the late 90's where the software
volume control worked. I wonder when they took that out of the firmware?
I don't even know which firmware that unit had, but I'm thinking it was
the original 4.2C.
